Embracing Nature The Concept of the Outdoor Office

Situated within the Royal National City Park Norra Djurgården in Stockholm, the Outdoor Office by Anders Berensson Architects blurs the boundaries between workspace and natural environment. This innovative structure combines the functionality of an office with the tranquility of an outdoor meeting space, offering a unique setting for work and collaboration amidst nature’s embrace.

Architectural Integration: Harmonizing with the Landscape

Designed as an extension of an existing office building occupied by Lundhags, a Swedish outdoor and shoe company, the Outdoor Office minimizes excavations to preserve the park’s integrity. Elevated on wooden pillars atop the sloping terrain, the building features a wooden framework filled with wall panels and glass, creating a sheltered outdoor space that seamlessly merges with its surroundings.

Tranquil Design: Connecting with the Forest

The upper portion of the structure mirrors the shape of the existing building, gently sloping to align with the natural landscape. Facing the forest, it offers serene views of the canopy and tree trunks, fostering a sense of tranquility. In contrast, the lower section comprises a concrete amphitheater integrated into the terrain, with levels sloping towards a stage for outdoor events, embracing both functionality and aesthetics.

Balancing Modernity and Tradition: Materiality and Detailing

In crafting the Outdoor Office, the architects sought a delicate balance between modern office architecture and traditional cabin design. Utilizing glulam beams and pillars as the primary structure, the framework is filled with glass windows, wood panel walls, or left open, reinforced with wooden crosses. Interior materials such as pine tree boards for the ceiling, pine plywood for walls, and oak boards for the floor, create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Simple Elegance: Detailing and Furnishings

Detailing throughout the Outdoor Office exudes simplicity and elegance, with a focus on natural materials and black painted steel accents. Windows seamlessly integrated into wooden pillars, lamps clad in matching wood, and furniture crafted from leftover construction materials exemplify the project’s sustainable ethos. Chairs adorned with shoe leather from the Lundhags factory pay homage to the building’s occupants, creating a cohesive and inviting environment.

In summary, the Outdoor Office by Anders Berensson Architects redefines the traditional office setting, offering a harmonious blend of modern functionality and natural tranquility within the Royal National City Park Norra Djurgården.
