In the heart of bustling Bangkok, where urban landscapes dominate, a green oasis emerges, offering respite and rejuvenation to its citizens. Designed by HAS Design and Research, the Benchakitti Rain Forest Observatory stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to providing ample green spaces for its inhabitants. Spanning an area of 130 m², this architectural marvel seamlessly integrates with the surrounding Benchakitti Forest Park, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in nature’s embrace.
Addressing the Need for Green Spaces
Bangkok, like many other metropolises, faces challenges in providing sufficient green areas for its residents. With only 6.99m² of green space per person, the city falls short of the World Health Organization’s recommended minimum of 9m². Recognizing this shortfall, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration initiated the creation of the Benchakitti Forest Park, which opened its doors to the public in 2022. This endeavor not only adds to Bangkok’s green footprint but also introduces a new dimension of well-being to urban living.
A Vision of Harmony with Nature
The Benchakitti Rain Forest Observatory serves as a beacon of harmony between architecture and the natural environment. Nestled within the verdant expanse of Benchakitti Forest Park, the observatory embodies the aspirations of Bangkokians for more green spaces. Architects Jenchieh Hung and Kulthida Songkittipakdee of HAS Design and Research envisioned the observatory as a gift to the city, seamlessly blending into its lush surroundings.
Embracing Natural Aesthetics
Drawing inspiration from the park’s ecosystem, the observatory’s design mimics the organic forms of leaves, creating an illusion of being enveloped by nature. Its sinuous contours guide visitors to different levels, offering panoramic views of the park from the upper observatory level and tranquil resting spaces on the lower level. Here, activities such as yoga, meditation, and family gatherings find harmony amidst the sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves.
Sustainable Integration
During daylight hours, the observatory seamlessly blends into its surroundings, thanks to its facade adorned with smart boards and sustainable green paint. At night, subtle lighting behind the smart boards illuminates the structure, casting an ethereal glow that merges with the natural ambiance. HAS Design and Research envisioned the observatory not merely as a functional facility but as a living organism, fostering community engagement, and environmental stewardship.
A Beacon of Environmental Awareness
Beyond its architectural grandeur, the Benchakitti Rain Forest Observatory symbolizes Bangkok’s commitment to environmental conservation. It serves as a gathering place, educational hub, and testament to the city’s pledge to prioritize sustainability in its development endeavors. As Bangkok embraces a greener future, the observatory stands as a beacon of hope, inspiring citizens to cherish and protect the natural world for generations to come.
