Transforming Heritage Biblioteca El Tintal by Bermúdez Arquitectos

Bermúdez Arquitectos’ Biblioteca El Tintal stands as a testament to adaptive reuse, breathing new life into a former waste transfer plant and transforming it into a vibrant community space. Situated along Avenida Ciudad de Cali with 6th Street, the library occupies a 5-hectare site, repurposing a 25-meter-wide by 72-meter-long industrial warehouse into a cultural landmark.

Reinventing the Exterior: Facade Transformation

The revitalization of the disused industrial structure showcases its robust concrete framework and expansive spans, lending it a distinctive industrial aesthetic. A focal point of the exterior is the 75-meter-long viaduct, originally designed for waste disposal, now repurposed as a dynamic element that provides access to the library’s upper floors and serves as an interactive feature within the adjacent park.

Maximizing Natural Light: Interior Design Innovation

At the heart of the library’s design is a spacious reading room on the second floor, illuminated by seven towering skylights that bathe the space in natural light. Strategically placed light pockets ensure optimal illumination levels, while expansive windows frame panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The layout prioritizes flexibility and openness, with facilities centralized for efficient circulation and spatial coherence.

Spatial Harmony and Functionality: Interior Configuration

The first floor features a central corridor flanked by windows and circular openings, connecting various rooms including an auditorium and children’s area. Retaining the original voids of the building, a mezzanine hosts offices, a sound library, and a video library. Technical areas are strategically positioned for maximum efficiency, maintaining a seamless flow of circulation throughout the space.

Preservation and Innovation: Materiality and Construction

Preserving the industrial character of the original structure, Bermúdez Arquitectos opted to retain the gray concrete while incorporating light concrete for new structural elements. The exposed aggregate of the light concrete enhances light reflection, imbuing the interior with a luminous quality that complements the surrounding landscape.

In conclusion, Biblioteca El Tintal stands as a remarkable fusion of heritage preservation and architectural innovation, repurposing an industrial relic into a dynamic cultural hub that enriches the urban fabric of its surroundings.
