Introduction
502 Coffee Roasters, a prominent figure in the Korean specialty coffee scene since 2009, embarked on a new journey with the expansion of its cafe and roastery center in Nangok-ri, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. Spanning an impressive 6,500 square meters across three buildings dedicated to a cafe, roastery, and education, the project aimed to embody the core value of “relationships starting from coffee” in its spatial design.
A Collaboration of Vision
Architectural firm Stof, in collaboration with 502 Coffee Roasters since their Samseong branch, took charge of the project from its inception. The goal was to translate the brand’s ethos of relationship-building into tangible architectural elements, fostering a space where physical and experiential aspects interact harmoniously.
Design Principles in Action
Stof approached the design with a focus on creating connections among various elements such as structure, environment, program, and behavior. Furniture forms were strategically chosen to facilitate spatial flow, ensuring coherence between architecture and furnishings. Natural materials with reflective properties were selected to enhance the ambiance and capture the surrounding environment. Moreover, intentional empty spaces were integrated to facilitate seamless transitions between different program elements.
Enhancing User Experience
The design not only reflects the brand’s identity but also prioritizes the user experience. Diverse seating options cater to different preferences and purposes, while strategic placement of structural elements disperses density and creates visually appealing spaces. Neutral finishes like terrazzo, concrete, and stainless steel dominate the cafe, complemented by warm wooden furniture to create a balanced atmosphere.
Architectural Highlights
Upon entering, a striking wooden structure behind the coffee bar connects the floors both visually and acoustically, serving as storage and providing illumination. The hall space features bright finishes and curved grid shelves, offering comfort and natural separation between seating areas and circulation paths. Large shared tables on the second floor facilitate community engagement and serve as versatile display spaces.
Conclusion
502 Coffee Roasters by Stof exemplifies a harmonious fusion of design and function, where every element contributes to the overarching theme of relationship-building. From its thoughtful spatial layout to its carefully selected materials, the space embodies the brand’s commitment to fostering meaningful connections over a cup of coffee.
