The transformation of an iconic warehouse in Victoria’s coastal Torquay into Sou’West Brewery marks a tribute to surf culture’s connection, warmth, and playfulness. This project, led by Ewert Leaf, encompasses a beer hall, play area, tasting pavilion, and open-air terrace, embodying Sou’West’s commitment to authentic, on-site brewing.
A Rich History: From Quiksilver Headquarters to Brewery Haven
Originally constructed in the mid-90s as the headquarters for Quiksilver, a locally renowned surf brand, the 1495m2 warehouse holds a special place in Torquay’s surf coast community. Sou’West Brewery’s vision aimed to create a dynamic food and beverage hub, seamlessly integrating brewery equipment to showcase their crafted approach. Inspired by the site’s rawness and the rugged coastline, the design team opted for naturalistic materials like terracotta, terrazzo, timber, and leather, balancing robustness with comfort and approachability with detail.
Crafting Cohesion: Spatial Strategy and Structural Modifications
The transformation of the warehouse into a cohesive venue required extensive spatial strategy and structural modifications. An upper-level slab was removed to accentuate the building’s scale, while a purpose-built extension accommodated the brewery’s equipment. This extension involved meticulous town planning negotiations and a thorough services upgrade to suit the new purpose, emphasizing integration to celebrate the warehouse’s essence.
Attention to Detail: Elevating the Customer Experience
Attention to detail is evident throughout the interior design. From the striking bolster-style backrests of the booths to the expressed joints in the glass screens and canopies, each element reflects Sou’West’s dedication to craftsmanship and enhances the customer experience. The venue’s holistic vision, from the macro scale to the micro details, fosters cohesion and strength at every touchpoint.
Creating Atmosphere: From Streetlamps to Skylights
Bespoke streetlamps create a human scale, while terracotta floor tiles add texture to the vast floor area. Landscaping, varied furniture arrangements, and suspended canopies enhance the spatial experience and aid in wayfinding. The addition of a 12-meter skylight floods the beer hall with natural light, complementing the vibrant natural tones and inviting ambiance. Together, these elements transform Sou’West Brewery into a bustling community gathering place, solidifying its status as an iconic landmark in the global surfing community.
