Rediscovering Tradition: The Renovation of Beyt el Sayde

Nestled in the Sayde neighborhood of Beirut, Lebanon, lies “Beyt el Sayde” (House of the Lady), an architectural gem meticulously crafted by AK Architecture Studio in 2023. Perched atop the Ashrafieh hill, this penthouse stands as a testament to resilience, serving as a poignant replacement for an old rooftop ravaged by war.

Embracing Nature: The Green Oasis

Stepping into the apartment, visitors are greeted by the verdant embrace of the patio, seamlessly bridging the urban landscape with the interior sanctum. This lush oasis not only offers a respite from the bustling city life but also affords panoramic views of Lebanon’s iconic trio – the vibrant cityscape, the azure sea, and the majestic mountains.

Designing with Purpose: Spatial Harmony

The patio, acting as the nucleus of the home, delineates the living, dining, and kitchen areas from the private quarters while fostering a sense of connectivity. Flanked by verdant foliage, it serves as a visual anchor, facilitating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor realms. Drawing inspiration from traditional Lebanese architecture, the house boasts lofty ceilings that accommodate a mezzanine, housing an architectural office that overlooks the panoramic vista while maintaining a symbiotic relationship with the patio.

Honoring Heritage: A Tribute to Lebanese Architecture

Resonating with the rich architectural legacy of Lebanon, the house pays homage to tradition through the incorporation of three wooden bay windows reminiscent of the iconic Lebanese triple arcades. Furthermore, the preservation and reintegration of original tiles from the pre-existing structure underscore the design ethos, infusing each living space with a touch of nostalgia. Vivid hues – beige, dark red, and green/grey – resonate throughout the interior, imbuing the space with warmth and character.

Reimagining Tradition: The Patio Paradigm

Inspired by the traditional Lebanese “Kiosks,” the patio emerges as a modern reinterpretation of this architectural archetype. Unlike its historical counterparts, the recessed patio serves as a visual focal point, drawing the gaze inward while providing a sanctuary of tranquility amidst the urban milieu.

In essence, the renovation of Beyt el Sayde stands as a testament to AK Architecture Studio’s commitment to preserving heritage while embracing innovation. Through thoughtful design interventions, this rejuvenated penthouse epitomizes a harmonious synthesis of tradition, nature, and contemporary living.
